Itinerary:  Day  1 - 2 - 4 - 5 - 6 - 7 - 8 - 9   ...next

Day 3 (Wednesday) - to San Gerardo de Dota (Montane Oak Forest)

We'll look for the Quetzals and other specialties before breakfast, and after eating will depart at 11 am.

Our next destination is only 30 minutes away, but is at much lower (and warmer) elevation.  The descent to San Gerardo de Dota will remind us of the dramatic differences in vegetation and wildlife over short distances that are typical of Costa Rica.

The short drive allows us to over look the top of the forest canopy as we drop down into the valley to the valley of the Rio Savegre, where we will be staying at a wonderful family-run lodge.

Accommodations are quite comfortable and the dining is superb.  After lunch at the lodge we'll go for an afternoon hike in the valley and explore the stream-side vegetation for birds.  Dinner will be served at the lodge.

You'll be able to see up to ten species of hummingbirds around the lodge, including the Magnificent, Green Violet-ear, Purple-throated Mountain-gem, Gray-tailed Mountain-gem, Scintillant, and Fiery-throated Hummingbirds.
